Nokia, the brand that has created sensation in India long ago is back. Almost all my friends in my college days had their own “Nokia” handset. I used to have “Nokia 6630″ which was a pretty good phone. Now, as the time passed by some big names got into the Indian market and turned the way things worked for Nokia. Nokia’s presence was always there but they don’t really have good and strong smartphone market in India.

Now, to repair the damage the company has finally abandoned their treasured Symbian operating system and have embraced the Windows Phone 7.5 with their all new Nokia Lumia 800. Nokia grabbed the design of its N9 handset and added Windows Mango experience to it. And the result is, I must say, beautiful.

Let’s have a detailed look at some of the interesting features of the phone will offer.

Hardware Design

Available in three colours (Black, Fuschia and cyan), the 3.7’’ Nokia Lumia 800 is enclosed in a polycarbonate shell, which makes it durable and scratch-resistant. There are 3 capacitive Windows keys directly below the screen- Back, Menu and Search. You can find all three volume button, camera and the power button on the side.

The top features a 3.5 mm audio jack and a microSIM and a microUSB port. On the bottom is the loudspeaker grill. The 8 megapixel Carl Ziess camera lens and the dual LED flash are placed lower on the back of the phone.

Display

The 3.7 inch ClearBlack screen is AMOLED with WVGA resolution and a Corning Gorilla Glass display should offer better indoor and outdoors vision.

Performance

The 1.4 GHZ Qualcomm MSM 8255 single-core processor and 512 MB of RAM might just do fine with the operating system. The battery is only 1450 mAH and is expected to give average results by Smartphone standards.

Software

As many of your might have already known, that lumia 800 comes with 7.5 Mango which supports multitasking. The interface is clean and simple as we know that Microsoft doesn’t allow any customization for its Windows mobile operating system. The handset uses Live Tiles, fitting a 2×4 grid of tiles on the screen, that may be regrouped in any order. It comes handy with the latest Internet Explorer update and Bing search.

There are some interesting applications on the phone.

• Nokia Drive: a turn-by-turn voice navigation system and included in the phone for free. The user can just download the map for offline usage. Once that’s done you can simply input your final destination, and you’ll get a voice guided navigation. We can choose between 2D and 3D map viewing.
• Nokia Music: It works as a location aware music player. The location-aware feature is called Gigs which finds concerts near your location. The music section is made up of albums, songs, playlists, genres and artists.
•  Tune-in Radio: It utilises your Wi-Fi or data connection to stream live content from a bunch of global radio stations.

Camera

The 8 MP Carl Zeiss lens disappointingly offers an inconsistent performance. It shoots excellent pictures in proper light and offers many settings ranging from scenes and effects to contrast, ISO and more. But it sometimes blows the colours out and doesn’t handle the noise very well. Touch to focus works extremely well but the face detection feature is absent.

The 720p HD video recording is great but the bitrate is low and the camera struggles with autofocus.

Conclusion

Available at around 30000 INR, the Lumia 800 is one of the best products that Nokia has released in the market in recent months. And if you want to use a Windows Phone, then Lumia 800 is a good entry point.
