The effect is produced by a jquery script. I’m not a great programmer to customize wordpress code to bring an effect like that. A similar effect can be produced by a wordpress plugin Digg Digg. Download and install the plugin before you can activate the scroll down effect. You should see the social buttons like the screenshot shown below by the time your finish implementing this tutorial.
Once the plugin is installed, you have to check the “Ajax Float” check box to activate the sites which you want to activate.
Once you are done, scroll down and enable “Ajax Left Float Setup” by enabling Ajax left float feature and Jquery library.
Scroll down still further and adjust the scrolling position of the social buttons. This varies from blogs to blogs. Change the “Marginleft” value to adjust the position of the scroller.
Save the settings at the bottom of the plugin to activate your auto scroll down social icons while scrolling down. Hope this helped, Cheers.

Cool plugin mate! But unfortunately the Digg Digg plugin doesn’t play fair with me!!!
@pubudu, yes dude it doesn’t work with most of the templates. Fortunately it worked for me.
I agree, the plugin looks great. But (and there’s always a but) you might want to see what effect its having on your page speed. I used to use the ‘social slider’ plugin for wordpress, but it reduced my page speed by about 4 points which effectively brought it to 74/100 (which is really low). Mashable, as far as I’m concerned, has possibly the worst page speed compared to other blogs in its league. Its page speed is a mere 70/100 and thats not nearly good enough for a professional blog.
According to Google, page speed will soon impact your search rankings so its a very important factor for webmasters.
@ manish, well I don’t care about page speed. That’s one of the 200 factors for PR. So, I don’t want my blog to be too perfect.
Oh well, its your choice really. I don’t mean to intrude. The slider may actually benefit you by getting you more targeted visitors.
@ yes, that’s right!! I recommend everybody to use it. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with all the themes.
Thanks a lot man. I installed the digg digg plugin and when i was scrolling down the widget kept coming in to the post area. Finally changed the marginleft value to 550 and it workd great! Thanks for the share!
I was looking for this and finally found here. Thanks for sharing.
that’s very cool
Thanks alot
thanks a lot, man.. i’ve been searching this mashable plug-in for a long time. glad i could use that finally
I just implemented it on my site. Worked like a gem. Thanks a lot..
Interesting concept, and as a fan of Mashable it is always good to see that the site is looking for growth. However, I am really turned off by the layout. Am I the only one who’s really bothered by the insane amount of ads and share buttons on the site? It’s a mess!
page speed dropped significantly. And caused fatal errors. Bwomp.. shinyfeel.com
