PC Configuration Suggestions in $600 to $1000 Price Range

Do you not simply hate it when a computer magazine gives advice which computer to buy for a certain price range? How do they know what you would need? Generally, the best configuration that can be bought is either from a very big and featured advertisement budget provider or a configuration that features stuff you would not even dream purchasing. The main consideration, even before you go into the price range battle, is what are you going to do with your machine, once you got it?

Choice what to buy, even before budget considerations?

You should decide if you are going for a PC or a Mac. Simple to figure out, because for the same quality Mac you pay double the price of a PC. Another consideration, not necessarily after the first one is made, is to decide if you will purchase a laptop or a desktop computer. The other consideration, also not to be decided in sequence, but as a bulk with the other two, is what you will use the computer for? If it is gaming, it is one consideration, if it is desktop publishing, another. There are dozens of decisions that will influence you, like for instance, are you going to edit HD video content? Are you going to do 3-D animation, or use it to produce music – professionally, not simply listen to mph files?

Why does this matter?

It matters, because you will invest more money into different components. If you are going to handle sensitive data, then you would like to have a solid state hard drive, instead of a regular HDD. If you are going to be gaming a lot, you will pick a high end graphic card and can use value RAM, regular HDD and do not need a high end audio interface. If you are doing a lot of 3-D rendering, then you need a different graphic card then you would pick for a gaming computer.

What about an all-rounder for up to a thousand dollars?

It is always most feasible to purchase all the parts separate and assemble it yourself. That said, it is most likely more advisable if you would purchase your computer already assembled from a reputable manufacturer, like HP/Compaq, Acer, Apple, Dell or similar. They offer sometimes real bargains, already outfitted with monitor, motherboard, processor, RAM and everything else, so you need not worry about all the parts or drivers to download. They even give you a scanner and/or printer with your purchase, or upgrade your HD size and RAM for less than what you would pay on the street. Operating system is included and already installed.

What to look for?

Processors for laptops in that price range need to be at least triple core, for desktops quad-core. RAM is almost obligatory to feature 4GB; the drive needs to be at least a DVD+/-RW capable device, the hard disk 1TB at 7200 RPM and SATA at that. Graphic cards are tricky, because every other week there are some new ones being released. It should be either ATI Radeon or NVidia GeForce with at least 512MB DDR3 dedicated memory.

It should have at least one HDMI out and 1080p resolution capability. The motherboard shall feature onboard audio that is at least 5.1 and allow for some upgrades of processor and RAM in future. It should also have sufficient additional SATA slots provided, as well as several USB 2.0, 3.0 and perhaps also Firewire connections. The power supply needs to be sufficient to carry not only the configuration, but also some eventual upgrades with ease – 500W at least, the more, the merrier.
