26th January 2015, is an important date on the Indian calendar this year, it’s the republic day, so first of all we wish you a very happy republic day. Now coming to the point the day marks the coming into force of the constitution of India, which replaced the erstwhile Government of India Act, 1935, and is celebrated as a national holiday.
While the day is celebrated in schools, government offices, Indian consulates abroad and elsewhere, the main ceremony is staged in New Delhi at Rajpath, in front of the India Gate. It involves a colorful and attractive tableau of distinct cultural aspects of various Indian states, march pasts by all the three arms of Indian armed forces, and a fly past.
Indian President Pranab Mukherjee Republic Day Speech
The Republic Day Presidential Speech
A common feature of Republic Day celebrations across India is the speeches made to mark the occasion. The President of India himself addresses the nation on the eve of Republic Day. The republic day speech is eagerly anticipated by one and all, as it reflects the President of India’s, otherwise a mere ceremonial head of state, views on the current state of affair in the country. The speech on Republic Day in 2014 by President Pranab Mukherjee is an excellent case in point.
In his speech, the President of India notes with concern the emerging threats to India’s experiment with democracy. Reaffirming the future role of democracy going forward, he lists corruption as the single biggest threat gnawing away at the roots of our long established democratic institutions.
This focus on corruption did not come randomly, or due to his personal whim. People following current events in India would be well aware of the massive and spontaneous anti-corruption movements that have been raging across the country for the past year or so. This was a well timed speech, which approved the increasingly activist role being played by our citizenry.
Given that 2014 was also a year of the general elections, the President also wisely exhorted and called upon the people of India to exercise their democratic right to vote enthusiastically and responsibly.
Speeches in schools
But away from the glamor of celebrations in the national capital, Republic Day witnesses plenty of speeches, especially in schools, that instill a sense of patriotism among students. It makes them aware of the rich and proud history of their country. Here’s a Republic Day speech in Hindi at a school where a school girl elaborates on the importance of the occasion.
This speech, delivered in Hindi, provides a detailed history of this special day. It goes on to describe the functions that are held to mark this day and solemnly notes the numerous sacrifices that were made by Indian freedom fighters. The speech then reminds the listeners of their duty towards the nation, democracy, and secularism.
The speaker notes that the goals that we wanted to achieve when we became free are yet to be fulfilled. There are many in the country who have not yet benefited from the fruits of freedom, saddled as they are with illiteracy, and economic destitution. The speaker exhorts the citizens of the country to work towards eliminating these vices, and make the country an egalitarian paradise that was the dream of our freedom fighters.
While the school girl making this speech used Hindi as her language of choice, in several English medium schools, it is not uncommon to see Republic day speeches in English. Whatever be the language, speeches are indeed an excellent way to rouse a feeling of patriotism, and instill a sense of duty among the future generation of our nation.
