Shorter URL means Better SEO for Google

Hey, wass up? This is provamsi here, and I’m back from holidays. I had a great time out there being at home and enjoyed each and every moment living there. After coming back to Chennai everything went alright until I got a call from a stranger. I don’t generally pick up calls from strangers, but because I saw a movie called “Phone Booth” last week, I was forced to pick the phone.

Tring tring, tring tring…
Stranger: Hello! Is this provamsi?
Me: Yap, Who’z dis?
Stranger: This is maria sharapova, and I have something important to say, do have some time for me?
Me: About what?
Stranger: I told you its really important.
Me: No, I don’t talk to strangers.
I disconnected the phone and started writing this article. So, let’s come to the point right away.
Last week I noticed an interesting fact that helped me rank my pages better in Google. It was the sorter version of the URL that’s doing the trick for me and for most of the folks.
If you carefully observe, I’m using very short form of URL for sometime now. My SERP results seemed to improved every time I’m used this trick. I’m using only 2 to 3 words in the URL of each post and I found really good results after doing this. The articles with sorter form of URL were ranking higher than the articles with longer form of URL.
Mashable is also following the same strategy for some time now, I noticed it today just before posting this article. Here is how I tested mashable. Searched for site:mashable.com in Google and clicked on show options link as shown in the following snapshot.
I clicked on the “latest” link to see the latest URL’s that are crawled from the site. As you can see most of the URL’s had maximum of 3 keywords in the URL.
Many other sites are following the same strategy for better SERP results and I found the results really impressive. I seriously advice people to follow the same strategy for better rankings.

Great find. I’ll have to test the theory but sounds logical
I hope the logic is true,. Let me try it out on my newer posts.
Well this theory is totally new for me, let me try this and will come back again with my personal experience
It can be coincidence. I don’t believe this is not the right way. But SEO is always about trying new things.
That’s hard to believe but not bad for giving a try..seems to be working as seen in the screenshots but I will recomment again if this worked for me.
Good one..:)
ohhnice post but really?/?
It means I have done a mess at my website, from now will try to Shoten my URL’s thanks for sharing this information.
r u sure that it really works.. even though there is no base for my argument IMO I feel that the Keywords and lengthy URL ‘s will great and the Search engines will give value for them . . what do u say.. ?
Not just shorter URL, the depth of URL also matters. For e.g. abc.com/pqr/123.html is better than abc.com/xyz/pqr/rst/123.html … Nice info you brought forward.
sounds like a good theory, less words can have more impact as too many unrelated words will just make the title/url seo un-friendly…
will give this idea a try and see if it works
Yes! You are right shorting post url is really worth and every blogger should do this to force Google to avoid this SERP fact.
Nice brief and this post helped me alot in my college assignement. Thanks you for your information.
I have always thought of this concept but never had tried after reading this post i will try it on one of my newer websites.
Thank you.
