VMware Change Screen Resolution on Debian Lenny Ubuntu and Fedora VM’s

VMware is one such beautiful tool every software engineer love. Indeed, this is one of those best virtuvalization software available these days. I know it’s not free but it’s the best. The very first time I Installed a guest machine on VMware, I was so frustrated to see the default screen resolution. Later I found a way to fix this out. The solution is simple. Here is what you should do.

I imagine that you have installed the VMware on Windows Box and the Debian or Ubuntu or Fedora as a Virtual Machine.

If you have just installed any of the linux box, then it might ask you to install vmware tools right at the bottom of the virtual machine. Installing it should fix the screen resolution. If you don’t see the screen then you can go to “VM” tab on the VMware console and click on “Install VMware tools”.

How to Install VMware Tools on Linux?

Once you click on “Install VMware tools” option on the “VM” tab you should see a file that looks like this “VMwareTools-7.8.6-185404.tar.gz” automatically mounted to your cdrom. Extract it and run “vmware-install.pl” script.

Also, note that you should install “gcc” and “make” packages. Use this command as a root user. Make sure to install only “gcc-4.0” any advanced version of gcc will screew thing up for sure as VMware doesn’t support it.

apt-get install gcc-4.0 make

You can use “yum” to install these packages on Fedora.

Once you do that, you should now see couple of options under “view” tab called “Auto fit windows” and “Auto fit guest” to auto fit your screen resolution on next reboot. You can also choose “Fit windows now” and “Fit Guest Now” to get things under your control.
